Volunteers Picked Up 1.2 Tonnes Of Waste In Dubai For Global Recycling Day!
Plastic is harmful to the environment, and the Global Recycling Day aims to raise awareness among people about how this phenomenon. Following with ethos of this day, Dubai Municipality organised a series of activities and programmes to raise awareness. One such initiative, ‘An Hour with the Cleaning Worker’ witnessed volunteers sorting through a massive 1.2 tonnes of waste.
1.2 Tonness Of Waste Sorted!
The Dubai Municipality celebrated Global Recycling Day on Saturday, March 18, wherein they organised several activities and programmes to commemorate the occasion. For this, over 500 volunteers gathered as they represented 11 government and private entities to participate in activities held at Al Mamzar Beach, Al Qudra Lakes, Al Ruwaya Reserve, Al Qudra Street, and Umm Suqeim Beach.
One of the biggest highlights of the day happened to be ‘An Hour with the Cleaning Worker,’ which is a volunteering initiative focussing on the city’s cleanliness and environmental sustainability. This activity saw several volunteers join cleaning workers to support the waste management efforts. As a result, after they sorted through a whopping 1.2 tonnes of general waste, these volunteers isolated approximately 400 kilograms of waste for recycling! Sounds a lot, doesn’t it? So, this initiative not only instilled a sense of social responsibility amongst participants but also helped in recognising the efforts of the cleaning workers.
What Is Global Recycling Day?
For those who aren’t aware, Global Recycling Day aims to highlight the importance of reducing waste, promoting its reuse & recycling, and preserving natural resources for future generations. Additionally, the Dubai Municipality was recently named a UAE-level winner at the Energy Globe Awards 2022. Moreover, this initiative has seen more than 16,000 hours of volunteering work for preserving the city’s environment and aesthetic appearance since its inception in 2017.
